Heathfield School in Ascot is a girl's boarding school and will be swimming on 6th
Dec to help raise money for Terri. Students watched the programme about Terri in
PSE classes and were very moved by her story.
Our swim will involve girls, teachers, matrons, parents and anyone else we can drag
along. All of our 1st to 3rd formers will be taking part in some way. The 3rd form
think they can swim the 35km themselves...and were disappointed that it wasn't actually
the real English Channel they were swimming - very keen! The 2nd form were keen
too and wanted to hire shark cages, the lot. With school on Monday morning we decided
the school's warm indoor pool was the best venue...

The local pools has given us two lanes for the whole day. The swimmers have been
organised into a number of relay teams. The local long distance swimming club is
also taking part and they are attempting to swim the 35km distance individually.
We could have as many as 100 people swimming on the day.

"Now listen, dahr-ling...there are a group of us here in Billericay who swim on
a Friday and it may not be very creative but we call ourselves the Billericay Friday
Swimmers. There are 23 of us and we have decided we are going to swim the Channel
for Terri. Not the real thing of course but the distance. To be honest we are more
of a 'coffee morning in water' because we do more talking than swimming when we
are in the pool. But we are going to try. We think if we start next week we might
finish by Dec 6th. I hope that's alright. We just wanted to let you know..."
Message on Rob's answering machine, 10Nov03:
"Now we don't wish to boast...but we have done our swim already and we have done
the whole thing! We are all rather surprised because I am not sure we honestly thought
we could swim that far. We did two thousand and ninety lengths. Sounds an awful
lot but someone said that's the Channel so that's what we did. We enjoyed ourselves
immensely and will send the money we raised to the Trust and let you know how much
it was when we know.
A poem received from another swimmer in the group:
A 'coffee morning in water' is what we used to be
Then Swim For Terri entered our lives and things changed, considerably
We natter not, we chatter not, now swimming is the trend
It is a poss-i-bility that 'coffee mornings' will end.

Well where do I start? The 'Being Terri' documentary was shown to 800 students at
the school and had an extraordinary impact. Swim For Terri has been embraced by
the whole school. Not only are we swimming (and running!) but Swim For Terri has
now been incorporated into the 'citizenship' part of our curriculum for this year:
making a difference, getting involved and making it count.
There are a number of activities - largely initiated by the girls - that make up
our participation.
We have about 500 students involved, from all age groups, 11-18 year olds, and from
the elite swimmers to those who swim very little. Some are just seeing how far they
can swim, others are working as a team, aiming to swim the 35km WITHIN their groups.
Does this put us in the running for the most channel crossings completed? We are
aiming for twenty! This will be happening in every single PE lesson in the week
beginning 1st Dec. Makes me dizzy thinking about it, and all credit to the PE department
who will have the pool, the pupils, floats, flippers, armbands and pyjamas all organised!
Some year 11 girls (aged 15-16), not keen on swimming, asked if they could run the
35km and they have been in training. There are 10 teams of 6 students, so in total
that's 30 Channel crossings, or 1050kms or from Birmingham to Milan, Italy!
This is not just a fundraising activity for the school. It started as empathy for
another child but has led to much learning, creativity, teamwork, health and fitness,
community spirit...and FUN. We are truly glad to be part of it.

will be a healthy competitive edge. Let's just hope the boys can keep up...

Oldbury Wells School calling from Bridgnorth. No, it's not our votes to tell you
about, Ã la the Eurovision Song Contest, but our Swim For Terri!
We had lots of interest in participating in the swim and so organised ours a few
weeks early! The girls swam and the boys sponsored them. Seemed fair!
We had a bit of a challenge with our pool. It was out of action for the first half
of the term, and just when we thought we would have it back for the remainder of
the term we were told that it would only be available for one week.
So we put our skates on and got our cossies on and we have just had our Swim For
Terri - from 10-14Nov!
Ours is not an Olympic sized pool or heated to any great temperature (for that read
'cold') so the girls endured great personal discomfort to complete their lengths!
We had all levels of swimmers involved, from county standard to those that travel
at a more sedate speed. All played their part. In total we had about 80 swimmers
and they have raised a considerable amount of money!

Post swim: With 18 swimmers and a lot of support from parents, pool staff and sponsors,

were provided with refreshments and a good day was had by all. Thank you for allowing

With a week to go before our Swim For Terri we are still chasing the elusive few
swimmers who may prove the key to getting us to the 35km mark. But I am confident
we will get there.
Our swim is a truly multilocation effort with people swimming at their local pools
with the distances we swim being 'pooled'. There are people swimming in Felixstowe,
in Ipswich and in Burstall, a weeny village in the sticks - I didn't even know they
had a pool there frankly! - and we have two swimmers in Wimbledon in London.
My husband will be rounding up some of the local football team this Saturday, probably
with the offer of 2 hrs of circuit training and weights as the alternative to participating
in our swim.
35kms here we come!
Update received 27Nov03: Felixstowe Swimming Club have kindly agreed to make sure
there is no 10-15km gap between us and Calais. A number of the 10-18 year old swimmers
will be joining us for the swim. I will still remind my husband to 'persuade' the
footballers to participate as it will do them good anyway...

Derek called me the other day to let me know he would be doing a Swim For Terri.
He is one of the few, if not the only one, who will be doing the 35km on his own.
I am writing this as in Derek's own words 'I don't like technology. Swimming goggles
is as far as I will go."
A little research and you discover that Derek is the only person ever to have swum
across Morecambe Bay (12 miles), around Walney Island (24 miles), and is one of
the few to have swum every lake in the Lake District top to bottom. So he might
not like technology, but he can swim.
Berners is a swimming pool local to Derek and they have very kindly given him use
of a lane for the day. Derek will start swimming at 6 in the morning and, without
stopping, expects to finish about 12 hours later. For us ordinary swimmers it's
tiring just thinking about it.
Derek has left sponsorship forms at the local fish shop, newsagents and several
places inbetween to drum up sponsorship for his swim. He is steeling himself, not
for the swim, but for the prospect of looking over the shoulder of one of the Berner's
staff, while they help him send a few emails to raise sponsorship that way too.
Good luck Derek - and thanks!

It took a while to find a pool with enough lanes for us all and we thought at one
stage we might have to swim the actual channel after all...grease and all! Gurnell
Leisure Centre, Ealing, are allowing us to use their pool free of charge throughout
the morning. We have 3 lanes and are swimming in relays.
Zoggs are supplying us each with yellow swim hats and goggles! We will have 'Swim
for Terri' printed on them or written in the hand of the person with the neatest
or most creative handwriting!
We have an Ealing Gazette reporter coming along. We are not sure if they're intending
to take part but I'm sure they'll get thrown in!
If we have the time and energy we will swim the Channel and back! We'll let you
know what happens - with photos...
__________________________________________
Post swim: Our swim took place on Saturday 6th December at Gurnell Leisure Centre,
Ealing. It was a cold and wet morning but 30 people managed to drag themelves out
of bed and arrive at the pool at 7.45am, all with smiles on their faces!
Once everyone had arrived we had a brief team meeting, discussing our goal and organising
the strong and weaker swimmers into groups. Meanwhile, the non-swimmers were putting
up posters around the pool advertising Swim For Terri and walking around the spectators
gallery with collection buckets.
Zoggs kindly donated yellow swimming hats, goggles and keyrings for each swimmer
so we distributed those - and then we were off!
We were only allocated two lanes to swim but we soon took over the entire pool!
There was a mixure of swimmers doing different things, some were swimming non-stop,
some were stopping every 10 lengths, others were stopping when they needed a breather.
Each swimmer had their own log sheet of how many lengths they had completed, these
were tallyed up every so often and added to the grand total displayed on a huge
board. Swimming commenced at 8am and finished at 10.30am when we realised we had
done almost 400 lengths over the target! We completed 1802 lengths in total.
The atmosphere was of sheer triumph at the end! If people were tired they did not
show it! Our next challenge after the swim was to find a pub to feed us all!
Credit goes to every person that made this swim possible, thank you!

end-of-season pint in the bar! After this swim we are doing a Swim For Terri on
the day itself, 6th Dec, in Lanzarote so go and look us up on the world map...
Also, we are looking forward to playing our part in what is being suggested for
next year as a worldwide swim...very exciting indeed.

Members of two of our junior squads will be tackling the swim - some at training

ever away meet for some. Not quite in the Channel, but pretty close...

We decided to make sure Sheffield was on the map with a Swim For Terri.
Having been promised two lanes at Ponds Forge in Sheffield, we sought out our friends
to see who could swim something more than the doggie paddle!
The real challenge became obvious: how to make sure ten lads would be in the pool
early on a Sunday morning after a Saturday night out. Well, us girls had to be creative.
Let's just say we pointed out that one of our female swimmers is well equipped and
doesn't need anything to stay afloat.
So Sheffield's answer to Pamela Anderson - sporting a cozzie - and ten lads, and
a few others, early on a Sunday morning, will be swimming for Terri.
We hear some are even trading in the more usual Saturday night on the razzle for
a cozy night in with a cup of cocoa in preparation for the swim. Now there's dedciation
for you.
We will all be swimming our hearts out for Terri.

Pool time constraints meant we have had to be creative so we are doing our Swim
for Terri over a period of a few weeks and we will complete the last laps on Sat
6th Dec. At the moment there are two of us - me and my mum! - but we WILL complete
the 35kms between us, come what may...and I suspect we will attract a few others
so we don't end up with shoulders as wide as an albatross by the time we finish.
We are proud to have Shepperton, down by the River Thames, on the map for Terri.

It's not that we wanted to be first to do our Swim For Terri or anything...but we
just couldn't wait! We raised the money thanks to the Stowmarket Lions Club allowing
us to use some of the time they had booked for their annual sponsored swim for charities.
We were allowed six teams of six swimmers and we had 45 minutes to swim as many
lengths of a 25m pool as could be done, relay fashion. Each team was determined
to do more lengths than the others. I think it was as hard getting out of the pool
after each length as swimming the actual length. (Next day all of the winning team
complained of stiff ribs from the effort of getting out.)
The winning team did a record breaking 208 lengths. Not the Channel, but not bad
going at all and we had a lot of fun doing it!

We have both children and adults taking part, some of who are taking the opportunity
do complete ASA distance awards (from 50m - 3000m). I am hoping to find more swimmers
as at present I am swimming half the distance - not what I intended...!
Update received 23 Nov 03:
We have had so many people now wanting to be involved that we are going to swim
44 miles - the Channel and back! This has taken off here. Things are going very
well and we are all having fun. If this goes on - and given we are right next to
The Thames - we'll have to consider using the river too...only joking...it's very
brrrr cold brrrr in the Thames in December...

We are organising three teams of swimmers of different ages & abilities, who between
them will swim 35kms during our training session. You never know, we might just
manage two English Channels in total...

Post swim: 48 swimmers Swam for Terri tonight. The swimmers ranged from 7 to 17
years of age and they managed to swim in excess of 70km between them. A fantastic
effort! So that's across the Channel and back again. They were all glad to see dry
land when they had finished, mind!
CONGRATULATIONS SWIMMERS!

We are pleased to put a dot on the map for the island of Ireland for the Swim For
Terri. Thirty diligent students will be getting themselves diligently down to the
pool to diligently put in some laps.
The core of the team will be the Dublin University Swimming Club who didn't even
have to be bribed to Swim For Terri. The usual promise is free Guinness at the bar.
We will of course be in the bar when we have finished to replace lost fluids - hey,
what else do you expect, we're from Ireland and we're students - rewarding ouselves
with plenty of the black stuff, justifying it also on the grounds that we might
just swim the Channel for real one day and if we do we'll need the insulation...

A core group of masters swimmers will be flying the flag for the Isle of Man in
the Swim For Terri. We may not have the azure blue waters and the reefs that some
other islands in warmer climes boast of, and our cats may famously not have any
tails, but we Manxmen and woman are a sturdy lot... and goodlooking too!
Our Swim For Terri will be a dedicated swim during a one hour training session on
Saturday between 1 and 2pm and we are hoping to cover the distance of the English
Channel between us. That's 3km each in an hour so it's head down and off we go...

Attempt, although if any others appear on the day, I shall not be proud/shy...feel
free and let's knock off the lengths...!

Nae fear, the Scots are coming......but nae wearin' kilts, nor wi bagpipes for snorkels!
We'll be there with swim teams from 'Swim4All' lesson swimmers, teaching staff and

Post swim: We swam the height of Ben Nevis! We had a number of Swim4All families
involved and some young swimmers, Lyall, Murray and Ian, from our Stroke Development
III classes. We all thoroughly enjoyed swimming and raising money for Terri. Thank
you to all those that contributed. We would like to send Terri our love and best
wishes from all at Edinburgh Leisure Swim4All department.

I have so far managed to bully 30 people into taking part in the swim. It is taking
place at Clickimin pool, the most northerly 25m pool in the U.K. We decided against
swimming in the sea due to the ice-berg hazard. We shall all be in at the same time,
9am - 11am, before the pool opens to the public.

I think we get the prize for the furthest west of the Swims for Terri on the UK
mainland (I had to craft that carefully as I just noticed the Swim For Terri in
Dublin...)
Having volunteered to do the Swim For Terri on my own if necessary, others have
clearly felt pity for me and I am relieved to say 'we' are now 20.
We are confident we can complete the full 35km of the Channel, particularly because
one of our number is a delightful chap called Austyn Shortman who is a former Commonwealth
swimmer and the current world record holder at 50m freestyle (Masters swimming)
ie a normal person but with an in-built out-board motor.

Post swim: We have had a great afternoon! We had a lovely turnout for the swim,
and lots of fun was had by all. I put on nibbles and drinks after the swim, and
so far have over three hundred and fifty pounds in COINS in my swim bag! Thank you
for giving us the opportunity to join in. We all had a great day here in Wales.
